IVF

How does IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) work?

IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is a key assisted reproductive technology used to treat infertility.

During this process, mature eggs are removed from a woman’s body and then joined with sperm in a laboratory.

At the beginning of this process, we hormonally stimulate the ovaries to ensure the growth of more egg-producing follicles. We then fuse the retrieved eggs with the sperm in a specialised laboratory, which leads to fertilisation.

The partner can provide fresh sperm prior to the egg retrieval procedure or pre-frozen or donated sperm can be used.

To ensure the best possible result, the embryologist selects the appropriate laboratory methods (ICSI, PICSI, AH, Embryoscope, EmbryoGlue, IMSI, EC…) taking into account your wishes.

Who is IVF for?

The treatment is recommended for couples who have difficulties with natural conception for health reasons. IVF may be a suitable solution for:

Women suffering from egg deficiency.

Women diagnosed with fallopian tube blockage, endometriosis or pelvic adhesions.

Men with demonstrably reduced sperm quality or quantity.

Couples suffering from infertility associated with immune problems.

Couples with another medically diagnosed cause of infertility.

IVF treatment step by step

Step 1

Consultation with a doctor

During your first meeting with our specialist, you will receive comprehensive information about IVF treatment. The doctor will explain in detail the necessary examinations and the course of treatment. Your interest and questions are our priority, so you have plenty of space for any questions you may have at your consultation.

Step 2

Diagnosis of infertility

Our doctor will suggest a full range of tests, including blood tests and ultrasound scans, to pinpoint the exact reasons for your failure to have a baby. These tests involve both partners, with men undergoing a spermogram to assess the quality of their sperm.

Step 3

Initiation of treatment

Based on the results of the examination, the doctor prepares an individual stimulation protocol. You will be informed about how to properly apply and store the prescribed medication, which will increase the chances of getting healthy eggs.

Step 4

Control ultrasound examinations

During treatment, we regularly monitor the size and number of follicles in the ovaries. The optimal size and number will allow us to plan the ideal date for egg retrieval.

Step 5

OPU – egg collection

The procedure is performed under brief anaesthesia and takes about 15 minutes. Using ultrasound and a thin needle, we remove the follicular fluid along with the eggs. On the same day, your partner needs to provide a fresh sperm sample if you are not using donated or frozen sperm.

Step 6

Fertilisation and embryo culture

In our laboratory, embryologists fertilise eggs using the latest techniques. Embryos develop under supervision for up to five days. You will be regularly informed about their development.

Step 7

ET / Embryo transfer

The date of the embryo transfer is determined by the doctor after consultation with the embryologist. The procedure takes place in our surgery room without anaesthesia and lasts only 10 minutes. Your partner can be present to support you. After a short rest, you will receive all the necessary information for the next steps and you can return home without any worries.

Step 8

Pregnancy test

Two weeks after the procedure, you will take a pregnancy test. We also recommend an HCG blood test to confirm the pregnancy and rule out any complications, even if the urine test comes out negative. This test is important to confirm the pregnancy, but also to rule out a biochemical or ectopic pregnancy.

As part of the treatment success statistics, we only record real pregnancies, i.e. confirmed fetal heart action.
